GVSU ‘21 | 3D FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN
During my work as a personal shopper, I gained new insight into consumers’ grocery preferences. I noticed that adults buy and eat all kinds of foods we consider to be children’s foods. For this open-ended project for a cereal box redesign, I looked at modernizing the classic Froot Loops mascot and box for an untapped market: grown-ups. I selected a limited-edition Tropical flavor to develop a more specific theme. A few other factors I considered was a failed launch of a Toucan Sam mascot redesign, the visual elements that signify “limited edition” products, and the ways in which I could make this box stand out from anything else in the cereal aisle. My idea was simple: a modern minimalist redesign, like what we often see in movie rereleases or other limited products. For Toucan Sam, that meant reducing him down to the most basic colors and shapes of his face. I avoided anything too dramatic based on negative consumer reactions to the official Kellogg’s redesign. Then, I was able to create a limited color palette and simple illustrations based on the new flavors available in this edition. Lastly, the back panel of the box was printed with a black and white coloring page, chosen for its ability to be enjoyed by multiple age groups. The final result is a simple yet effective design meant to catch the eye of shoppers looking for something unique in both flavor and style.
